Matcha oxidises, absorbs moisture and fades under light. Packaging is the main defence between milling and the customer, and it also drives minimum runs, freight volume and labeling work. Suppliers in Japan offer a range of formats; the right one depends on where you pack, how fast you sell and what your customer sees.

01 · Bulk

Bulk formats

  • Barrier bags (aluminium laminate) in sizes from 1 kg to 10 kg or more, often nitrogen-flushed or with oxygen absorbers, packed in cartons. The standard for buyers who pack locally or use matcha in production.
  • Bag-in-box for manufacturing volumes.
  • Cold storage before shipment is common; ask how long the bulk was stored and at what temperature.

Bulk keeps Japan-side complexity and minimums low and freight efficient. The trade-off is that you or your packer must handle powder hygienically and repackage quickly; see shelf life and bulk storage.

03 · Protection

Protection features to ask for

  • Nitrogen flushing or oxygen absorbers in sealed packs
  • Opaque or light-blocking materials
  • Moisture barrier suited to humid transit and destinations
  • Tamper-evident seals for retail
  • Lot number and best-before printed on each pack
Ask what the pack is protecting against

Suppliers will happily use cheaper film if you do not specify barrier and light protection. Put the requirement in the specification.

04 · Cost

Cost and freight implications

Tins add unit cost and cube; a pallet of tins carries far less tea than a pallet of bulk bags. Pouches are lighter and denser. Stick packs multiply packing labour. Compare landed cost per finished unit including packaging, freight and duty, and remember that packaging minimums, not tea, usually set the first-run size; see matcha wholesale minimum order quantities.

05 · Where to pack

Pack in Japan or at destination?

Packing in Japan gives you finished goods and “packed in Japan” provenance, at the cost of component logistics and packing minimums. Packing at destination from bulk suits small or uncertain volumes, many SKUs, or markets with specific labeling rules. Many brands start with local packing and move to Japan-side packing as volumes grow.

06 · Labeling

Labeling responsibilities

Legal label content for your market — product name, net weight format, best-before format, importer, ingredients, barcodes, claims — is the buyer’s responsibility, whether the supplier prints it or applies your label. Organic logos follow your market’s rules; see organic matcha certification and equivalence.

08 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is nitrogen flushing necessary for bulk matcha?

It is the standard protection against oxidation for sealed packs, along with oxygen absorbers and barrier film. Specify it, along with light protection, rather than assuming the supplier will provide it.

Should I pack in Japan or in my own country?

Pack at destination from bulk when volumes are small or uncertain, SKUs are many or labeling rules are specific; move packing to Japan as volumes and designs settle to reduce handling and get finished goods.

What sizes do bulk matcha bags come in?

Commonly from around 1 kg up to 10 kg or more, in barrier bags packed in cartons; manufacturing customers may use larger formats. Choose sizes that your team can use quickly after opening.
